Aber bitte mit Sahne!? a collaboration with the Volkshochschule in Schorndorf

When I got offered to create the cover art for the Fall semester catalog at the VHS Schorndorf, I was only given the Title: "Aber bitte mit Sahne!? Gesund und munter älter werden".

I am very happy with how the cover turned out, and happy with the newspaper article from the Zeitungsverlag Waiblingen/Schordorf that came out about the project:

"What do Greek dancing, climate protection, inner strength, and a large cup of whipped cream have in common? More than you might initially think. The new semester program of the Schorndorf Adult Education Center (VHS) demonstrates this. Under the title “But Please, with Whipped Cream!?”, the adult education center brings together a wide range of courses and activities focusing on health, exercise, enjoyment, and healthy aging.

Appropriately, the cover of the new brochure features a nostalgic-looking ice cream sundae topped with an extravagant swirl of whipped cream. Dancers, musicians, athletes, artists, cyclists, and food lovers are gathered on top of the cream, representing the diversity of the fall/winter program. The subtitle sums up the central message: “Growing Older Healthy and Happy.”

The cover image was created by 28-year-old artist Alice Obermeier. Raised in Chicago and now living in Sulzbach an der Murr, she teaches workshops at the VHS in Schorndorf and is also a member of the Schorndorf Art Association. In summer 2027, she will also present an exhibition at the VHS.

The idea for the image came to Obermeier when she heard the title of the new program. “I immediately had an image of a large cup of whipped cream in my head,” she recalls. For the blue-and-turquoise striped background, she drew inspiration from the awnings of ice cream parlors in the 1950s. “I wanted to evoke a bit of that nostalgic feeling,” she says with a laugh. The VHS team loved the idea and is delighted with the result. Obermeier also documented how she created the image on her Instagram account (@alice.o.art). The original artwork is displayed at Alfred Isak’s ice cream shop (Marktplatz, Schorndorf) and is available for purchase.

But the whipped cream on the cover is more than just a charming reminder of times gone by. For Obermeier, it represents the special extras in life that you are allowed to treat yourself to. At the same time, the question mark in the title deliberately creates a counterpoint to the exclamation mark. Enjoyment should bring pleasure, but it can also be viewed critically. “So—enjoyment, yes, but in moderation,” the artist explains."

Kunstnacht Winnenden and Schorndorf
